The Lowndesboro School Alumni Association invites you to learn about a remarkable chapter in Alabama's educational history and how it continues to impact students today.
Founded in 1867 by Dr. Mansfield Tyler, the Lowndesboro School was born from the determination of formerly enslaved people who yearned for education and self-determination. Dr. Tyler, recognized as the most effective and creative Black leader in Lowndes County during his era, secured support from the Freedmen's Bureau to
construct First Missionary Baptist Church of Lowndesboro in 1880. This building, which is still standing, served as both church and school while accommodating a growing community hungry for knowledge. The school operated for over a century, moving into its own dedicated schoolhouse in 1883, which is also still standing. The schoolhouse became a cornerstone of Black education in the community and the region until its official closure in 1967 due to federal, court-ordered integration.
Today, the Lowndesboro School Alumni Association carries forward this legacy through our scholarship program, honoring the courage and vision of those who built education from nothing. Officially recognized as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization in September 2024, we are committed to protecting and perpetuating the school's founding purpose: education that transforms lives through dignity, respect, equality, independence, and prosperity. As keepers of this history, we bridge past insights with future aspirations by supporting the next generation of students who embody the same determination and excellence that defined Lowndesboro School.
Through our scholarship program, the Lowndesboro School Alumni Association remains deeply connected to the past while continuing the transformative work that Dr. Mansfield Tyler began over 150 years ago, ensuring that education continues to build dignity, independence, and prosperity for generations to come.
